Renewal tax on gross receipts each year
- The City mails the renewal form around the 15th of the month the license expires.
- The owner returns it with payment by the 20th of the following month.
- The owner attaches proof of the past 12 months' gross receipts and pays $0.50 per $1,000, at least $50, plus the City's administrative fees for that year.
Oceanside renewal tax for a Coast Highway cafe with $380,000 in receipts
The cafe owner reports $380,000 of gross receipts for the past 12 months and renews a March license on time:
- Renewal tax: 380 × $0.50 = $190
- Minimum check: $190, above the $50 floor
- Due date: April 20
- Administrative fees: the amount on the City's fee schedule for that year
Home-based businesses and Camp Pendleton families
A Camp Pendleton spouse selling candles from a Fire Mountain garage files the City's Home Based Business application and pays $54. Under the Military Spouse Residency Relief Act, a military spouse keeps a home state for income tax, and the City licenses the business. The City notes that veterans may qualify for an exemption from local business license fees under Business and Professions Code section 16001.8.
When to hire a CPA for an Oceanside renewal
Owners renew on 12 months of gross receipts with proof attached, and a CPA can reconcile that figure to the federal return before the deadline. For a shortlist, use how to choose a CPA.
